Hey everyone. I haven’t had the internet over the past little bit and I’ve really missed browsing this site. I just read over all the posts to my first thread “Carpentry as a Career” and it came to my attention that I never updated you with what’s going on (for those who might be interested 😉 ).
I decided to apply at George Brown (the Construction Technology Management course http://www.gbrownc.on.ca/Marketing/FTCal/buildtech/T105.html). Tomorrow I am mailing off my acceptance to them. Its a good programme and they cap it at 70 people so I’m happy to have gotten in.
I want to give my sincerest thanks to all who replied to that post. It really helped me to make the choice I made, which I feel is the best one. I’m really looking forward to working in the building trades. The battle plan is this. I’m going to go to college and get that diploma. Once I’m done college I will either a)start a carpenter’s apprentice because I miss the hands on too much or b) continue on with a transfer agreement with the university of Minnesota and spend another year or two getting a degree in civil engineering through correspondence (they have a transfer agreement with the college, meaning I’d learn at the college using the university’s curriculum). I’m going to try and get into construction on my summers off, but I’ll post more questions about that later.
And in other news, next Wednesday April 16 I am in the Ontario skills competition for framing. Looking forward to that a great deal. Wish me luck. Got to assemble a children’s playhouse in 5 hours. My shop teacher has had us (my partner and I) praticing like mad the last week but that’s ok cuz I find it fun. I’ll post the result (and maybe even a pic of a medal if I get one lol).
Again, my sincerest thanks to everyone here that helped me get to this point. I plan to be around here a lot more now that I have the net!
Cheers and the best of wishes.

Your in my neck of the woods, you have a summer job yet? hehe. People with a passion are the ones you want to look for....
I'm working at a resort this summer doing maintenance....
Will have 4 month's off next summer though if you're looking for someone
Contact me via-email if your serious..... (reply to this msg and it will give you the option)
I'm a small relatively new company that does design / new construction & renovations, my official schooling is a little bit of civil engineering a diploma in architecture and even more hands on and self taught.
Projects slated for this summer include a couple 1000s.f.+ additions, some renovation work, a kitchen reno and a 2200 s.f. custom cottage/house in muskoka/haliburton..... Most of my work is subbed out but have a lead carpenter and apprentice at hand. If you can do Autocad then thats an added bonus. Next year is always a possibility, as I grow I am constantly reminded that I need good people that I can trust as my own time on site diminishes.
Cheers
John.
Congratulations.
If I remember right, you are in HS and your parents had doubts about this choice of career. Did we help woo them for you?
Excellence is its own reward!
You do remember correctly. And yes, they were wooed.

Congrats!
I have to ask just one question, though: Do ya get to use nail guns for that competition?
Nope, no nail guns unfortunately......
My hands have the blisters to proove it (built 4 in practice this week... not used to swinging a hammer for that long... but its fun so who cares).
Cheers
Becareful with that hammer swinging! If you are a newbie...you're elbow will hurt like holy heck soon!
I'll never forget how bad mine got when I built my kids playhouse before starting on the real house.
Advil baby...gets ya through just about anything!
So far so good elbows are passing the test....
