I always hated carving fittings….now I got an over the post stairs with a ton of ’em and maple no less. What kind of secret weapons do the stair rangers have in their arsenal? Has anyone ever tried specially shaped scrapers?

Allen: I have the best luck with just a super sharp set of chisels, rifflers, and my favorite tool is one of those flex sanding pads. . It has a three inch velcro pad that chucks in a cordless drill. You can really move a lot of wood fast with this.
I have shaped a scraper to the side profile of the rail, sharpened it and scraped the joint down. This works well also, except I have found that sometimes you need to make two scrapers, each a mirror image of the other. Then when the grain is contrary, you can attack it from the other direction.
