We are building an addition the client wants to have cedar line the closets. My questions are the following:
1. Should we install drywall and put the cedar over the drywall?
2. Place tyvek over the studs than install the cedar directly over the studs?
I think we should install something over the walls to keep out the dust from the insulation.
Any comments greatly appreciated.
It is a ranch so ceiling will be to the outside
two colsets are exterior walls

depends....
If your cedar is well milled, straight with t&g, ship lapped or splined edges you might put it right on the studs. Assuming also it is 1/2'' thick or better and not having too many loose knots.
Lacking such integrity you might need to back the cedar up with d-wall or osb.
I have installed it both ways, it just depends.
Partly you need to consider the location. If the closet is on the top floor you definitely need to rock the ceiling, for air-tightness, and should probably do the walls too. And any other location where dust infiltration could be an issue you should rock the walls/ceiling.
There is cheap/thin cedar closet lining that pretty much must be put over drywall or another solid surface. (Note that if you use that and glue it up you should use a low-VOC glue, but one that's known to be compatible with cedar.)
1. yes to SR You need to consider fire spread.
2. no to Tyvek. Tannins in cedar wil eat it right up
