My wife and I are in the process of building our first home. My wife is an architect but has not had much experience working with cedar shake siding. Unfortunately, our builder does not have much experience working with cedar either, so we are having trouble getting good advice. They are currently at the stage in the installation of the cedar where they are beginning to trim around our windows. We are using 1x4s for the trim and were surprised to see the trim board looking almost recessed next to the cedar shakes. The windows, Anderson 400 series, also seem to be projecting out beyond the trim more than I would have expected (about 3/4″). Is this typical??? I’ve been looking through old Fine Homebuilding issues for an example of a similar situation but have been unsuccessful.

Yeah, thanks...of course just before I read your response I found an article mentioning that. We are feeling pretty stupid right about now. Any ideas to fix the problem??
