cedar shakes -nailing tips

The question is should a purlin or blocking be used behind the shingles or is the plywood sheathing enough to hold the shingles in place. Thanks in advance

    Kinda depends on the application. . . roofing, or sidewall???

    Either way no extra support is needed
    i behind
    the sheathing, but roofing should be done over skip sheathing, sidewall is fine up against ply covered with 30# felt(tar paper).
