I recently purchased clear cedar beveled siding to do my house. I am concerned about weathering and graying of the cedar. I’m writing from the northeast (Long Island, New York). I’ve heard of 2 products that are supposed to be very good. One is called Penofin and the other is called Sikkens. I realize I’m going to have to restain every 2 or 3 years but I want to preserve the original color of the western red cedar. Has anyone used any of these products or have any other ideas or products they prefer? Thanks, Mike |

Good products, but I have no personal experience using them to prevent silvering of cedar. If I recall correctly, there was discussion of this not too long ago here. Try a search on "cedar" or "cedar sidng" here and see if it kicks that up for you. Search here is unpredictable here frequently.....it's like cracking a safe.
I'm in the process of staining 30 squares of red cedar shingles with the Penofin Ultra finish. I've never used it before, but it looks great to me. You can call them at 1-800-736-6346 and ask for samples of the different stains. You can also visit their website at http://www.Penofin.com
My understanding is that with proper application to sidewall shingles/siding the finish should last for up to 4 years. I don't anticipate the siding to turn silver in that time. I expect that it will keep the finish color but fade slightly. Good luck
