My 59 year old clapboard colonial has the upper levels covered with 8″ exposure cedar siding. Needless to say, the house has had it’s fair share of paint coatings and it is finally saying enough is enough. Existing cedar is not backprimed.
A previous owner applied a heavy dose of caulking at the lap joints in addition to the standard bead at all butt joints. I question the caulking at the lap joint – this does not seem right to me. Any help would be appreciated.

I agree.. yikes ... caulked joints and no back priming. Probably no edge priming either. Whats under the cedar clapbd's? What condition are the clapboards in and why are you asking the question in the first place?
