I will be taking down a cedar tree that has seen better days. Is cedar wood good for use in a fireplace? Or is it too sappy. Will it gum up the flue?

Cedar will burn nice and hot. As long as it burns hot, most of the garbage will burn out with the smoke. Don't overdo it and you should be fine. As a rule, you are best off burning as little "pine" as possible.
