Hey is there any engineering types out there? I am working on the up-stairs of a balloon-framed 1 1/2 story house. The ceilings are at 7 ft. I would like to raise them to at least 8 ft. or more. I am wondering how that will affect the support of the rafters/walls? The rooms are 15 ft. wide with 4 ft. kneewalls. Roof pitch is 12/12. Everything is framed with old full dim. 2×4.
I have it all stripped to the bare studs to re-insulate and sheetrock. Also was wondering about insulating the sloped part of the ceiling. Since it is only 2×4 rafters would it help to put some foil-faced ins. board under the sheetrock? I will be blowing in cels. under the ins. board. Will the rock over the ins. board cause any problems? Like nail-pops?
