Cell phone plans

USAnigel | Posted in Business on March 17, 2009 02:53am

I’m still with At&t but its running at $100 per month. Not that much included with the plan.

My question is, has anyone tried the new plans offered for unlimited access to all the options? ie unlimited call, texts, web, etc

At $50 for all this, it’s got me thinking about changing. Boost mobile was the one offered at this price and as far as I can tell they sub-contract from Sprint/nextel.

I'm with verizon on a $30.00 per month plan.

I currently use less then 10 minutes per month. Come December I'm free and going to throw the phone into the wood stove. I can't believe I thought I really needed it.

Friends of mine have let their contracts expire and then gone to Wal-Mart or Sam's and bought track phones and minutes.  They buy more prepaid minutes as required.

They claim that for the light usage they are doing, it is far cheaper than using one of the subscribed services.

The phone units sold are far more sophisticated now than they used to be.  Probably as good or maybe even better than what you use now with your service.

Unless you already have a compatible phone, you need to buy one for full price.  I.e., no freebies with this deal.

I went with Cellular South in Mississippi.  You can get a phone for free, and the unlimited "regional" calling plan is $59.99 or thereabouts.  Less than $65/month with all taxes, etc.  This includes all long distance, as well.  It also includes 750 Nationwide, or roaming minutes, if you travel outside their area.  For true "unlimited" Nationwide it's $79.99.  They are also in parts of Tennesee and Alabama.

They share the same technology as Verizon, but they own their own towers.  You can still use them anywhere, though.  The reason I really like them is that they were the only ones working when Hurricane Katrina came rolling through, and the overall coverage is much better than most.

I just dumped Verizon and switched to Virgin Mobile prepaid. It seems to have very little downside. I got a phone at Target for $15 and activated on the website.

The way it works is that they commit you to putting in a minimum amount of "cash" every 60 days, IIRC it's $20. Then with no package you pay .20 a minute. If you commit to a minute pack they take it out of your cash and the rate goes down to .10/min. or less, but you lose the minutes after 30 days. So for $20 you can get 200 minutes per month, and that's it, no additional taxes or mystery fees.

Prepaid seems to work on the idea that they work to sell you minutes and messaging packs at decent rates, or you stop paying.

I run telus with the blackberry pearl. $99.99 all in one plan.. email....internet..all the calling i want...text etc... but no long distance so it ends up being $130.00 when it is all said and done.. doesn't matter who you go with

They will all have you by the [email protected]. I am not signing any contracts letting mine expire in a year. Apparently next year there will be more companies offering better plans as a result of the FCC cellular frequency auction. (somebody could correct me if I am wrong)

do you happen to have cricket in your area?35 a month unlimted everything. works excellent for me.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T
MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE
    DUCT TAPE.

    1. USAnigel | Mar 17, 2009 06:41am | #7

Cricket is just starting up around here. Metro PCS is another. very confusing!

I use my cell as my main number so it has to work!

      1. alwaysoverbudget | Mar 17, 2009 06:56am | #8

i'm not sure where your at ,but if crickets there you ought to check into it. sometimes they do a 25 talk all you want. whats really great about it is you pay your 25 and no extras,if you try to do something thats not in your plan,it won't work, versus getting a upcharge at the end of the month.

negatives are,you have to buy your phone, since no contract,no free phone. rang of service is pretty much limited to your hometown and maybe 35 miles beyond. you can get more coverage, but its extra.

theres achance that boost is connected to them.YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'TMOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THEDUCT TAPE.

    AT&T
    $116 a month 1350 minutes
    Unlimited Internet, text etc.
I have the iphone so I have gps, email and all the misc goodies that make living a little easier.

I went with AT&T because of the rollover minutes. Wintertime I use about 1000 a month, summer about 1500 so it evens out without getting pounded with the extra minute fees.

I shopped around and it seems everybody is pretty close to the same price for the minutes. The disappointing part was u couldn't find a discounted price if I double up with my wife on a provider. And the attitude of the salespeople was annoying too. They expect you to sign a 2 yr $2400 contract without asking questions then give attitude when you want explanations.

I gave up on a "plan", and now have an ATT go-phone.

I pre-pay for all my minutes.

For every day during which I use my go-phone, my "minutes" get charged one dollar.

And for every minute of phone usage, my "minutes" get charged ten cents.

And finally, regardless of how many prepaid "minutes" I have on the account, they will expire in three months unless I renew them by adding more minutes.

So -- if I use my phone every day, for only a few minutes each day, my total for a month will be less than $40.

Politics is the antithesis of problem solving.

No contracts ever again. I bought a phone from a friend for $100 after her contract expired. $25 activation fee $20 a month or so for my use.. Learn to text saves lots of cash and once your teenager get you "learned" it is fairly fast.
Big PITA they have been charging everyone $1 a month for GPS location but keep delaying it's implementation. They say it's to expensive at a million!!!! they have made that many times over.
One of my nieghbours died as they could not locate him, had a heart attack. Wish the family would sue them and kick there butt into action. Most people think it's working!!

I am on Verizons nationwide plan, long distance included, no roaming fees, 2200 minutes, three phones are on this account for 138 dollars/month including all taxes and mystery fees.

I don't have text messaging included or any other features.

I might consider changing but the verizon "in network" free calling keeps my minutes down and adding my wife and MIL for 10 each is fairly appealing.

The cell phones are our only phones, no landline.

If you're close to Philadelphia there is some system called MetroPhone that a lot of people are getting.

Prepaid, but a very limited service area.

I myself am in my 15th year with Verizon.

Unlimited phone to phone, Unlimited Texting, and 2200 minutes a month. 3 phones, maybe $140 a month.

NOT for all the minutes or features in the world would I ever leave verizon.
