I would like to replace the linoleom floor in our laundry room/bathroom with ceramic tile. I have a concern the vibration from the washing machine will cause grout damage. have thought about maybe putting a “dampening” plate made of foam rubber sandwiched between two pieces of plywood under the washer. Does anyone have other suggestions or do you think my concerns with the grout is really going to be a problem?
thanks in advance

If the floor is solid, you probably won't have a problem. You didn't mention what type of floor you are putting the tile on. If its concrete, you probably won't have a problem. If it's a wood floor, it has to be solid. That's as a rule, whether it's going to viberate or not. Also the tiles should be firmly attached. Loose tile will crack grout too. Any more questions, e-mail me.
*The first tile floor I ever laid was in our laundry room. It is over 2 x 8 joists and 3/4" t+g plywood and there are no cracks after 15 years of three kid and one dirty carpenter washings. - jb
*rah, we routinely put ceramic tile floors in utility rooms, providing the flooring is sound (for instance, just as sound as you would want for ceramic tile floors in a kitchen). You might want to check out my post under "What is the best way to isolate a 2nd floor washing machine" for an idea that will put your concerns to rest...Regards, Steve
*I've had no problem with a washer and dryer on the ceramic tile floor I put in over 7 years ago. The only thing special I did is to put pieces of plywood under the feet of the machines to avoid scratching or digging in by the cheap metal feet of the machines. My tiles are set over 3/4 T&G strip subfloor and 3/4 ply over that, screwed into 2x8 joists.
