Starting to replace standard bulbs in our fixtures (when they burn out) with CFB’s. Most are 60W. Both tandem and single bulbs.
The 60W rated CFB’s aren’t as bright as incandescent 60’s, so would it be ok to do 75 CFB’s in these fixtures?

That's basically what I've been doing for about 10 years now.
Yes, when a fixture is labeled as max wattage, that is because of the heat generated. These new bulbs waste a lot less energy in the form of heat.
I find that the natural light bulbs *seem* to have more light for the same wattage too

It's not necessarily the case that you reading difficulty is due to the poor lighting.
