Hi all,
I’ve been a carpenter for quite a few years but only the New England area. We relocated to Charlotte (South Park) 5 years ago and I am continuing my trade as a Furniturmaker and smaller high end interior trim work.
I just began working on our home and my question is: What the heck is the black fibrous 4×8 sheathing I see in my garage? You can damn near poke your finger through it. I do see the corners are 1/2″ ply for strength. Is it more than likely all through the house? The exterior is covered with T-111.
Thanks and Happy Holidays

Sounds like cellotex to me.

I think it might actually be made from sugar cane stalks - I assume the byproduct of sugar production.
I think they made it out of what ever was cheap and lying around...
they use to use it up north...

Besides the black coating ya think it is much different than Homasote? Ithink Homasote is/was recycled paper, but now I am unsure.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Believe Homosote is a little more dense, like me.
I was looking for some for under the rubber floor cover in my van, noise and insulation type deal. I wound up getting the celotex, being as thats all I could find.
Thought the smell of the black would be a problem, but so far I can't detect it..so there is a semi-good use for the stuff.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Old saw I remember is that "cellotex" is any of the homasote left over after F&J made their national buy of the stuff . . .
Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Re Celotex, from this web page:
"Premium Insulating Sheathing is an earth friendly product made of 80% recovered and recycled products including hardwood or sugar cane fibers."
And this web page says it contains "carbon black" which is more or less soot.
This page says Homasoat is made out of 98% paper.
So there you go - everythign you never wanted to want to know about cheap sheathing.
Hey thanks everyone!!
You have confirmed I have $hit for sheathing on my South Park home ;) LOLI kinda figured but had no idea what this #### was technically called. It's coming off!Hi Snort,
I like it here, certainly getting more crowded but South Park area is very nice....pricey but nice. I bought the worst house in the best section of South Park.Look forward to chatting more with you all.
South Park ,lovely area .My oldest daughter and S.I.L. live in sedgefield off of Sunset Rd., another nice area and getting nicer.
Thanks for the comments. It is lovely. There are so many nice neighborhoods being redone. You mentioned the Sedgefield area, very nice. Then you have Dilworth with the bungalows (I missed that real estate boat), Eastover, Myers Park, South End. All exceptinally strong areas with very strong stable growth rate affected little by the housing down turn.
Soot huh?
Yep, more than I needed to know..LOL
Thanks.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Yes, "Homasote" is recycled newspapger or other celulose produces. And "Celotex" is made from sugar canes. But it is all a type of processed celulose, and the same could be said for MDF and even OSB.I used both of those in "'s as there such thing anymore. Both started out as the name of a product, but are (where for Celotex) now a company name that makes many products. So now it is Homasota xyz or Homasote abc.In addition to the sheathing product Celotex got into a number of different areas including shingles and polyiso. They went bankrupt in the asbestos lawsuites and the bits and parts sold off.So there is no Celotex company or even Celotex sheathing. But the name has been come generic. As one time I knew the generic name for the Celotex sheathing. IIRC is fiberboard sheating or something like that..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
I'm pretty sure Celotex's generic name is asphalt impregnated fiberboard.

For a while, IIRC Celotex had a product called "Nail Base". Darker beige or brown on the backside.
Not!
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
exactly.... also... called "hardboard" for rubber roof underlaymentMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

Most here will call it "black board" or beaver board IIRC.
Cellotex.... my first boss built a lot of panelized homes from National Homes
all the sheathing was cellotex.. and the windows were aluminum and the siding was aluminumMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
and all the rooms had humongous crown including the corners...

Welcome to the South, home of asphalt impregnated sheathing. AKA--pure s##t.
Why they even bother is beyond me. Probably your corners are plywood at least.
Min. code doesn't even call for sheathing so the only reason that stuff is used is to make the window and door jambs work out flush with the DW.
I've put up miles of that stuff, Celotex, and welcome to the neighborhood... Winterlude, Winterlude, my little daisy,

Hey Snort,
Are you from South Park area of Charlotte?
Is that where Kyle, Stan, Cartman, and Kenny's evil twins hang out?<G>I'm a little east in Chapel Hill. Besides the Celotex, how do you like it here? Winterlude, Winterlude, my little daisy,

I was having trouble with my email account, so I had to switch to Yahoo. When I did that I had to change the screen name as well.
I didn't like the old handle anyway. Woods favorite carpenter

gotcha - I've changed my screen name like maybe 3 times for similar reasons. Either that or upgrades on the taunton end has forced me to change.
I liked your old screen name. Still not used to your new one. Im gonna start a petition to have you change it back.Live by the sword, die by the sword....choose your sword wisely.
