Last week, walking the job, I went up on the roof to make sure there was no debris left laying around in odd locations and made an interesting discovery. It seems the HVAC guy left an old range hood fan and a section of newer duct on the roof, the duct section acted like a parabolic cooker and charred a spot on the roof. Its been up there for at least two months, thankfully that roof is class A fire rated. Just shows, as I told my guys, you can never be too careful.

reminds me of a roof job in CO high elevation once.
Was between two dormers about 5' apart. I had done all the metal flashings the day before and was shingling there with two valleys, sidewall flashings, and foil faced foam all reflecting high altitude sun back at me. I had sunburn under my arms, the insides of my nostrils, under my ears, etc, and drank about two gallons of water that day.
Just call me parabolic piffin

Yeah, tell me about it. Copper between dormers or in a valley is murder.

Adds new meaning to "Stick a fork in me, I'm done." Some one told me a bout a similar experience from wading in the ocean and walking on wet sand that refected the sun's rays up to normally shaded tender spots.
About the thing with burning the roof--back when I was a planning assistant, I took over walking a job site at end of each day when a planner went on vacation. They were building a mental health care facility in Saginaw. (They put the carpet down before the walls--interesting--but didn't protect the carpet, so it looked worn out before the building was finished.) One Friday about five, I was walking through the basement, writing my report and saw a trouble light, still on (crew had all left) with the hot bulb resting on and charring a cardboard box. I think by Monday there would have been a fire.
