*What's the difference ? He'll just 'moderate' your reponse out of existance if he doesn't like it...

*yur mudda tole u guys to be nice to strangers... but nooooooo... now see wat happens ?

*Luka's right . It will just get erased. I hardly ever go over to JLC anymore, tooo borrringgg. Dave

          4. David_Mason | Nov 25, 2001 10:58pm | #8

*Well I couldn't help it .I told him that I didn't appreciate what he said. There was a few things that I had to erase I tried to keep it civil. I'll keep an eye on it to see how long it last. Dave

          5. Luka_ | Nov 25, 2001 11:19pm | #9

*Actualy, going over there a bit ago, to see what the guy had to say about us, is the first time I ever went there. Probably won't ever go back except to see what happens in this one thread.

          6. Bob_Walker | Nov 26, 2001 02:41am | #10

*Actually, FWIW, I "know" Mike from a private home inspection forum; he's a fairly reasonable and knowledgeable guy, and he has posted a follow-up semi-apologizing for publically reposting a private message he had sent.

          7. James_DuHamel | Nov 26, 2001 03:24am | #11

*Public speaking ain't exactly his niche in life.He dissed so many people, with so few words. Just an opinion...James DuHamel

          8. Luka_ | Nov 26, 2001 03:47am | #12

*Bob,If I called you a loud-mouthed pig's ass... You objected... Then I said in essence... "Bob Walker is still a loud-mouthed pig's ass, but I should not have said so in public"... Would you take that as an apology ?

          9. Bob_Walker | Nov 26, 2001 04:52am | #13

*Luka;Good point, although you'll have to get in line

          10. Luka_ | Nov 26, 2001 04:55am | #14

*ROFLOLI'm too busy getting' called names, to do any name callin' of my own.b : )

          11. Joe_Hennessey | Nov 26, 2001 08:47am | #15

*He's got nothing on RK. Maybe he should sign up for some tapes & lessons?

          12. Luka_ | Nov 26, 2001 09:06am | #16

*Well, like Red Green says..."If the wimmin don't find ya O'Handsome, they should at least find ya O'Handley"...b : )

          13. Mongo_ | Nov 26, 2001 09:53am | #17

*Going off the cut-n-paste above, what he said about us is applicable. Some guys here do make a lot of noise. Though the nuke-tossing days of old seem to be a thing of the past, RK-type flare ups occasionally occur. I do object to the comments regarding the moderators. This is the style of forum we choose to support, and this is the style that Taunton allows us to have. A somewhat wide-open, anything goes type of atmosphere. Lots of building info flows through these threads, as well as a fair amount of fluff. By the moderators allowing what goes on here to occur, they ARE doing their job. Andy steps in when he feels it appropriate, and when he steps in, it does always seem warranted. He doesn't allow either too much, nor too little oxygen into the threads...thus we never really hyperventilate, nor suffocate. There's always just enough to keep the juices flowing.Hey, it's why we spend out cyber-time here and not at JLC. Gauging by the hit-counter, I'd bet this place may get as many hits in a day as JLC gets in a week. Different keystrokes for different folks. Let his comments slide. Do they really matter enough to warrant rebuttal?

          14. Sandy_Winfrey | Nov 26, 2001 01:45pm | #18

            *Mongos right....he aint worth it.

          15. Mad_Dog | Nov 26, 2001 03:53pm | #19

*I disagree. On this board, and through other means of communication with regular users from here, and in conversation with people at Fine Homebuilding themselves, they have always been respectful of JLC. The sysops have allowed us to discuss freely on many occasions the pros and cons of JLC and I've never seen anything come up like the lousy cheap shot this guy took.Interestingly, the rudest treatment I've ever gotten from a forum "Moderator" was from one on the JLC board, though again he did apologize through email later. But if this O'Handley guy really does work for the magazine, he looks like a poor sport, with sour grapes on his pouty face, and bad language rolling off his tongue. Not to mention inaccuracy and lack of any real useful information.Maybe he's too busy being a moderator to do anything useful. Not that JLC is competing with FHB, but Fine Homebuilding is ten times the magazine in every way. From state of the art graphics, excellent writing and variety to quality of content, there IS no competition.MD

          16. Andy_Engel_ | Nov 26, 2001 08:36pm | #20

*We can afford to be generous. <>And thanks to all who covered my back. Andy

          17. Daniel_Dunn | Nov 27, 2001 01:20am | #21

*At least he called some of us "smart" asses and not "dumb" asses. :-) Andy I hardly think you sit around on your thumb. MD He does have a poutty face. :-(Oh by the way I'll be the fisrt to say I'm a smart ass..... and proud of it. :) But I won't call you dirty names. Daniel

          18. Ron_Teti | Nov 27, 2001 04:39am | #22

*Yea I was looking at his picture and he does have the "aura"

          19. Ron_Teti | Nov 27, 2001 04:45am | #23

*Ya know I was just thinking (yea i get dangerous when that happens) I think maybe he could be talking about the RK post. I know I got pretty raunchy on that one . i did appologize for it but O'Malley probably didnt read that part. I even made some nasty remarks about RK mother. So maybe I am the guilty party in this. I dunno just a after thought.

          20. David_Mason | Nov 27, 2001 08:45am | #24

*I don't think he was talking about you Ron. He mentioned that it had been a few years since he had visited here last. That is the reason that I visit JLC maybe once a week but I stop in here everyday.

          21. SHGLaw | Nov 27, 2001 01:33pm | #25

*And what's the big deal about all this? Other than the fact that he's complaining that Andy's not doing a job that he's not supposed to do, which obviously Andy can live with, so what? We're smart asses? So? They're boring. Everybody ends up in a place that suits their personality. SHG

          22. Daniel_Dunn | Nov 27, 2001 03:12pm | #26

*SHG Are you saying we have personality?

          23. SHGLaw | Nov 27, 2001 05:38pm | #27

*Wow, I hadn't thought of that. I guess. Kinda like stone's have blood. Or Gabe has answers. Or my wife would let me use power tools. You get the picture.SHG

*Who is "RK"?What have I been missing out on?

          25. Mike_Smith | Nov 28, 2001 01:09am | #29

*never mind that .. who is <>..?there used to be a guy hung out here named that.. but he dropped outta site...if you see jeff... say hello

          26. Mr._Pita | Nov 28, 2001 01:41am | #30

*RK = Snake Oil salesman. What have I been missing out on? NOTHING! Translation: You missed out on a whole lot of nothing.

          27. James_DuHamel | Nov 28, 2001 04:55am | #31

*JJ!!!!!Man where on earth have ya been? I was asking about ya a couple of months ago, and only a handful of people even remembered ya! Ya been gone WAY too long!James DuHamel

          28. Ron_Budgell | Nov 28, 2001 05:11am | #32

*If you want to talk about smart asses, shouldn't that "thumb" in the quote above be plural?

          29. Mongo_ | Nov 28, 2001 07:41am | #33

*He's alive! He's alive!Good to "see" you, Jeff.Look around and you'll see you really haven't missed out on much. Some new names, but the same ol banter.RK was just another silly segment in cyberlife.

          30. RJT_ | Nov 30, 2001 05:42am | #34

*yeah,....... his mother wears combat boots.

          31. Crusty_ | Nov 30, 2001 08:17am | #35

*You guys may not realize it, but you're actually mellowing-out somewhat. Couple of years ago, when I first started coming here, if I asked a dumb question or said something dumb, you purt near tore my head off...... now you just ignore me. I see that as progress anyway. :)(Actually, your help has been invaluable.)

          32. Mongo_ | Nov 30, 2001 08:21am | #36

*Awww shaddup!Oops..sorry...a small flashback to the good(?) old daze...

          33. Crusty_ | Nov 30, 2001 08:40am | #37

*You guys are.... well,... animated. I tried that over at a technical board I frequent and they got their feelings hurt, pouted, said I was being mean to them, etc. Booooorriiinnngggg!

          34. Dave_Crosby | Dec 02, 2001 04:03am | #38

*Even though I agree with Mongo's post #18 "Let his comments slide. Do they really matter enough to warrant rebuttal?" I still found myself bristling a little when I read this thread. Because I hold the editorial staff at FHB (and especially our good moderator) in the highest proffesional and personal regard, I think it's unfortunate that Mike felt like he had to express himself this way. But, that's on him. What remains for me is that I hope nobody here thinks Mike is in any way speaking on behalf of anyone else at JLC. It's been three month's now since I left JLC, but I still do have a certain fondness for the magazine and the editorial staff, and I wouldn't want this kind of thoughtlessness to reflect on them.Happy Holidays to all,Dave

          35. jim_"crazy_legs"_blodg | Dec 02, 2001 06:54am | #39

*Dave, man, you didn't used to play in a rock band by any chance, did you?

          36. David_Mason | Dec 02, 2001 07:05am | #40

*Jim, I bet he wishes he had a nickel for every time that he heard that one. :-)Dave

          37. Dave_Crosby | Dec 02, 2001 10:10am | #41

*Yup, I'll take a nickel for every time I've heard that and $1.50 for each Melissa Ethridge joke.It can be amusing, like the time I went to the post office to pick up a package from a friend in L.A., the lady behind the counter wanted to know if this was for THE David Crosby, to which I replied "of course." Then I had to listen to the "Mill Valley in The Old Days stories, which were actually pretty good.I used to work in a cabinet shop with a guy named James Taylor. We figured we could probably afford to leave town for a while if we sold tickets, "Live, One Night Only . . ."Dave

          38. Andy_Engel_ | Dec 02, 2001 02:42pm | #42

*You AREN'T the real Dave Crosby? That was the only reason I ever hung out with you! I am so let down.Andy

          39. Mr.T | Dec 02, 2001 11:47pm | #43

*A buddy of mine used to say:I've been called worse by better people than you!Kinda fits here.If you can't take a joke, or learn to laugh at yourself and the world then your just another part of the problem.JMHO Mr.T

          40. David_Mason | Dec 02, 2001 11:57pm | #44

*I get the same thing because of Dave Mason who was in Traffic with Steve Winwood. I can get away with being "the Dave Mason" for a little while since nobody knows what he looks like. The other one I get alot is "Dave's not here ,man", which I have been hearing since that album came out.

          41. TLE_ | Dec 03, 2001 01:08am | #45

*Mike O. has re-visted Breaktime and has now decided we have shown improvement.Yippee f&%k.Terry

          42. Lisa_Long | Dec 03, 2001 04:21am | #46

*For a while people who didn't know me face to face would ask if I was Lisa Long, the actress. They said that part guardedly - "actress". Then I found out she's a porn star. Hah! But then I suppose there are some here who already knew that. ;-)

          43. Ron_Teti | Dec 03, 2001 05:21am | #47

*Lisa kinda thought your shorts looked familiar

          44. Ron_Teti | Dec 03, 2001 05:24am | #48

*maybe he can tell me what to do with a messed up door.

          45. jim_"crazy_legs"_blodg | Dec 03, 2001 09:38pm | #49

*"Only you know and I know..." But seriously, Dave, "you shouldn't have took more than you gave".

          46. Dave_Crosby | Dec 05, 2001 03:37am | #50

*I have to admit, I didn't know that, but I do see an unprecedented opportunity for ticket sales, far beyond anything I ever could have expected from "David Crosby and James Taylor."Imagine, "One Night Only, Live -- Dave Mason, David Crosby, James Taylor and Lisa Long."If'n that don't sell enough tickets to get us all to Australia, I don't know what would.Grins,Dave

          47. David_Thomas | Dec 06, 2001 10:20am | #51

*And you could say that Dave Thomas will be there handing out Wendy's hamburgers.

          48. ANDY_C._CLIFFORD | Dec 06, 2001 11:42am | #52

*Does anyone remember from about five years ago the message board that was from Good Houskeeping I think it was......off of AOL? There was a builders site there and it got sooooo raunchy it was finally shut down. Actually it was live chat now that I think back. MAn was that fun......all things must pass some day.....geez you rock legends have me pondering George and his buds jammin in the outter limits

          49. Mongo_ | Dec 07, 2001 06:07pm | #53

*Well...I went over and visited the thread in question. Funny thing is that Mike, after re-visiting FHB, wrote what a great place FHB is. Funny thing is that Mike, after having Andy post on the JLC thread in question, is amazed that Andy moderates all FHB forums by himself...which Mike described as a "gargantuan workload" or words similar. Funny thing is that the FHB time frame that Mike refers to as being "yahoo-like" was well before Andy took over as moderator of the FHB site. Kind of like criticizing GW Bush for the stock market crash of '29.Even after all that, Mike still allowsd his own offending comments to remain on the JLC forum. All I'll say is that I know Andy's internet personality, and I'm aware of the load he carries as moderator to a very popular and active site. I can't even read the new daily posts...never mind monitor them for content. Andy does the job splendidly.I'm not sure why Mike hasn't corrected his own comments, even though he now admits they were poorly aimed. Perhaps he is overwhelmed at the task of moderating and overseeing the 9 new posts that appear each day in the JLC folder he is responsible for?If JLC is "for professionals only," Mike had better be packing his bags. I feel he may not belong.

          50. Andy_Engel_ | Dec 07, 2001 06:09pm | #54

*Mongo, my annual review is in January. <>Andy

          51. bobl_ | Dec 07, 2001 08:10pm | #55

*Do you have an email address so we can tell someone what a fine job you're doing?BTW when's 5 cent beer nite in this tavern?

          52. Andy_Engel_ | Dec 07, 2001 08:43pm | #56

            *You'd drink nickel beer!!??

          53. Mike_Gabriel | Dec 07, 2001 09:31pm | #57

*Andy, IMHO, you do a hell of a job here. As someone who has been edited(who me, never.), you have been fair and excercised your duties professionally and prudently. Not just with respect to me and my swmbo, but as a whole. Feel free to present this to whomever conducts your review if you like. Mike Gabriel

          54. bobl_ | Dec 07, 2001 11:13pm | #58

*I want my Guiness for a nickle.

            *bobl,Half-pint or pint?

          56. Ron_Teti | Dec 08, 2001 05:49am | #60

*Andy,As someone who has been ridiculed, lambasted, blaspheemed and burned in effigy here...I love this site and Id buy ya so much beer your money wouldnt be any good here, if this were a real tavern you'd probably wake up in about a week in the back cab of a semi married to a truck driver named maude and captian kangaroo tatoo on your tushie....:) Your doing a great job.
