BHT (Butylated Hydroxy Toluene) is a chemical compound that has many uses including in food as a flavoring agent and preservative and in carpet padding as a preservative. The chemical is also used in cosmetics and vitamins. The carpet padding that contains this chemical is mainly rebond which is recycled foam padding. This chemical has been associated with "yellowing" of light colored carpets, especially olifin (sp?) fiber carpet and Berbers. BHT is also classified as a VOC (volatile organic compound) which can possibly adversely effect chemical sensitive persons, which isn't saying much as just about any chemical can adversely affect some "chemical sensitive" people. It is the VOC off-gassing that can discolor some carpets.
This link lists different types carpet padding and lists which types of padding has BHT and which does not.
Here is a Carpetguru Carpet News newsletter that talks about BHT and the yellowing of carpets. And another.
This article describes BHT stain removal from carpet.
