Can anyone recommend a good one? Definitely going to get a cap on this year and was figuring a damper would be a good idea as well. Fireplace damper leaks like a sieve but I want to get something reliable and safe.

I put in a Chim-A-Lator on our fireplace several years ago and haven't had any problems with it. Generally don't use the fireplace b/c it seems to run more air through than it outputs heat. But it stays sealed up most of the time. Think you'd have a hard time putting in a new cast iron throat damper, FWIW.
Thanks, I was actually considering something along this line http://www.woodlanddirect.com/Chimney/Top-Sealing-Chimney-Dampers?gclid=CLDgv__hgocCFQmJHgodMWciHg&partner=googleWhat I'd really like is a Wood stove insert but that might require too many modifications to the Fireplace itself (perhaps relining the flue). For now I want to make sure at least I seal off the draft and prevent any further damage to the flue.
The chimney top dampers usually seal better than the OE throat dampers and keep critters out as well. They are fairly easy to install depending on roof access.

I installed the Lock-Top (actually, 2 of them) on my chimneys. Couldn't be easier.
Just silicone it to the top of the clay liner, drop the SS wire down the chimney (a good light source in the room helps you to see getting it over the smoke shelf), drill 2 holes in the brick or mortar, hammer in the supplied fasteners, adjust the handle on the cable to length. Piece of cake.
They seal well, and you can tell immediately because you've never realized how much noise comes down your chimney until you clost it up. Easy to use.
