I am a carpenter, and I do a lot of work in the prisons in my area. They want me to do some cinder block repairs, but I don’t know much about block work. I want to do the repairs properly, and was wondering if anyone can recommed some good books about masonry to me. The prison wants me to do it because masons aren’t exactly plentiful in Alberta (we don’t use a lot of brick).

I trawl through second hand bookshops for stone and masonry books when I get to US and Canada. Sunset did a reasonable one in the 1980's called ''Basic Masonry Illustrated'', published by Lane publishing company of California.
There are lots of 'how to do' books out there but they can't beat seeing an expert at work. One book recommended dropping stone from six inches on to the wall to make sure it was bedded on - ouch!
I heard today about a website that shows video clips on how to do anything - masonry might be in there. I don't recall the site's name.
Thanks for your input. I was expecting to get ripped apart like the guys in the JLC forums do.
They (JLC online folk) are still sore at Albertans for all the stanely cups you won!
Have a good day
