We will soon be framing a house with a circular staircase. I would like tips or names of any practical reference books.

Robert,
There was avery long and interesting thread on that about a year ago? Try the archives using words loke "spiral", "circular" or even "cad" as I sem to recall Joe Fusco posting his first attempt at a spiral staircase on CAD.

*The cover article in the November "Woodshop News" is about a company that specializes in circular stairs. You might check it out.

*Robert, the book Joe refers to is very good, I refer to it frequently. But I must add a word of caution, circular stair building is not for the inexperianced or faint of heart. It's very involved and usually a hell of alot of work. That said, good luck.Bill Swales

Thank you for the replies. I will check out the archives and the book if I can find it.
Another quetion. In your experiences do you think it is wise to build circular stairs on-site or leave it to a company that does it every day? I have no experience with off-site manufactured staircases.

I believe the answer to that question is that it depends on the design and your expertise.

Robert;
Your post said that you are about to frame a house with a circular stair case, if you are the builder and the one responsible for the finnish stairs, there are a lot of stair companies out there that will furnish all of the parts and templates to build a pre-assembled off site stair system to any configuration. If you dont have circular stair experience, that would be a good way to get your feet wet, or hire an experienced stair builder to do your stairs, and observe on the first one. They are realy pleasant jobs to do, but can be very time consuming. Read first in any event, then proceed.
good luck

*The odd thing that many people don't think about where spirals are concerned is not only the amount of work required to build the stairs, but the problems associated with any thing built on a radius. Think through the materials you want to use for drywall/plaster, Trim and added costs in terms of labor. It is not cheap.
