I’m working on a short piece for Fine Homebuilding on knee pads, and I’d like to know a few things about the classic riveted knee pads with felt lining. Do any of you use these knee pads? If so, for what kinds of jobs? Why would you choose them over foam, gel, or rubber knee pads? Are they as uncomfortable to wear while standing as they appear? Thanks for your help!

Not quite like those
But I still use the old style (30 yrs at least) that I got for concrete finishing in the 70's. More spread out, like two overlapping ovals-one bigger/one smaller. So no, not bad standing at all. One leather strap with metal buckle.
I use them also for running base/shoe mld, flooring, demo if on my knees alot (more for protection than comfort).
Over the years they have had some modification-Dbl layer of the old felt style carpet pad, one folded (maybe two) foam carpet pad in there b/4 putting them on.
Like a baseball catcher, you keep the buckles to the outside.
They will slide down when walking when put on too loose. Do bind behind the knee if too tight. Not the best by far-but something I've never looked too hard to find better.
