I plan to reuse brick removed from my house during an addition. I have chipped away all the mortor. Should I also clean with muratic acid before relaying these brick as a veneer on the addition? AS the labor is myself and my son, I have discounted the labor costs.

Thanks Bubba,
I forgot to mention I plan t paint the brick. Should I still use the muratic acid?
If you want the look of used brick, the acid might ruin it.
Not informed enough to say whether soaking a brick in acid can damage it. Bricks are quite absorbant. Not sure if they would need to be neutralized in some way...
If there is residual loose material on the bonding faces, it can usually be cleaned off with a stiff wire brush and plain water. Same with the 'show' face if it looks a bit too 'used'.
Thanks csnow. One thing I forgot to mention, I plan to paint the brick after they are re-used. Have concern if the acid will react/interfer with the paint.
Oh... That's a whole other matter.
Surprised one would bother salvaging brick to be painted. The primary benefit (aesthetics) is lost. Concrete brick is cheap, stronger, probably holds paint better, and looks pretty much the same once painted.
Exterior clay brick makes a miserable material for painting. It's that spongelike quality that works against you. I suppose coatings have advanced, so perhaps you can make something work.
Another consideration:
If it is soft brick, you will want to use a soft lime-rich mortar with it.
Thanks Cory
