I realize there might be an ‘oh, duh’ answer to this, but I haven’t applied lap siding for years and haven’t asked or done exhaustive research on the subject.
For a smaller outfit’s need to curb its tool spending habits – but in the midst of a couple roof-over jobs, I would like to know if a siding nailer can shoot roofing nails. I ask in that order since a siding nailer obviously sports a deeper magazine for longer nails.
I am curious if anyone knows of the versatility I’m looking for in considering another purchase and why it isn’t possible if there’s no such thing. If so, some names would be nice. Thanks.

No can do. I'd say the biggest problem is the size of the head of the nails. You'll pretty much never see a nailer that will fire nails with two different size or shaped heads. Different lenths are no problem, even different widths... but change the shape of the head of the nail, and you need a different nailer.
Roofing nails have big fat head, and siding nails got little ones. No can do boss.
Got it - need different strikers and all, eh? I haven't even shot a sider - can't believe it! Been busy on other stuff, I guess. It's sure be nice if we could get some versatility out of more tools, though. I'm sure others wood agree. ;)
nah... versatility is over rated..
