How does one go about selecting a new composition roof that will last anywhere near the warranty period. The present roof is supposedly a twenty-five year roof and it was installed in 1991. It has lost slate so badly that it now needs replacing. The product was manufactured by Johns-Manville.

The JM fibreglass shingles of the late eighties were poor products. The surfacant you mention losing was ceramic chips and not slate.
The area of the country you are in can affect longevity of any shingle and the quality of the product chosen. A name brand produced at one factory can be better or worse than that in another quarter of the country and the climatic variations will also have their effect.
Amost all the Architectrual shingles are pretty good, But I don't know that any will stand up to their claims of fourty to fifty years of lifespan. Conversely, I have replaced plenty of the old fifteen year roofs that lasted for 25 - 30 years before needing re-roofs

Thanks for you response to my question. I will make an educated guess this spring on a replacement roof and go from there.
should we assume from your screen name that you are Tom, in Tennessee? Your location does have a bearing on the answer and the education you can have here for your "educated guess"

Yes, I am in Tennessee. Thanks for your input.
There are a bunch of forum participants from that neck of the woods, from Carolina to Ohio, who have nailed shingles. Hope you hear from them.

The other thing to remember is that many roofs will "last" long after they stop looking good. Are you replacing because it leaks or you suspect it will soon, or because it looks dull?
I am replacing the roof because the shingles have loss so much of the ceramic chips that the black fiberglas base is exposed. It is unsightly and the condition is futher aggrevated by the recent development of black streaks from fungus.Over the course of the roofing material's life, I have cleaned hundreds of pounds of the chips from gutters and chips blown from the roof onto the driveway, sidewalks and patio.
tomintn,
you pretty clearly have a warranty claim------but since it is a JM shingle ---lotsaluck with that!
of minor interest----------that actual material used for the granules on a shingle will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer----and possibly from plant to plant of the SAME manufacturer.
For instance Elk uses coal slag which is very sharp and angular-----their shingles have always had a LOT of loose granules in each bundle----which then spill out on the roof deck when you are working and can act like little ball bearings under foot.
some of the other manufacturers use crushed slate which produces a nice flat granule---like a flake-----that is much safer when walking on loose granules---and much less abrasive to workers hands.
You will often notice a quantity of loose granules in the gutter for the first few months after a new roof is installed-------but , after that, you should have virtually NONE showing up untill the END of the roofs life.
You seem to have been shedding granules continuosly----and that is almost certainly a defect in that specific batch of shingles-----not an indictment of the whole brand. Probably a problem on the line the particular 10 minutes YOUR shingles were made.
If you mention where you are located---someone will likely mention a brand with a good rep. for performance in your area.
Stephen
I appreciate your response. Thank you.
While there might be some truth in what you say, I hate it when HOs rely on that kind of thinking. if they wait, ignoring the appearance of the roof, until they have an identifiable leak on the inside, they are pretty well gauranteed to have a fair amount of rotted sheathing and possibly of rotted framing on the structure, making the re-roof far more expensive and compromising other living conditions in their homes
