I used the Delta on a big finish job last year. I will tell
anyone this is basically a piece of junk. Reasons:
1.Changing the blade requires lengthy disassembly
2. Brake is sporadic. You try to predict when it will kick
in. When it does, whole blade/handle assembly recoils. I
damaged some workstock from this reaction, and it caused me
to work around this trait, compromising what I could use it
for.
3. Moving the table was awkward, the lockdown did not want
to work near any preset stops (critical, this alone makes me
hate the tool.
4.The plastic legs are hard to clamp down to temporary work
surfaces, not much room for clamps that isn't on an angle.
5.Can't see through the "clear" blade guard to line up your
cut
6.Gotta be the noisiest miter saw I've ever heard.
7.The dust bag is slightly better than worthless.
Check out DeWalt. I've used their 12" slider. It is
excellent in every way. Lots of guys use Hitachi, but I
never have.

*Mad Dog you are right, The DeWalt is a better Machine, Than the others. And i worked with them all. The price is a little high.but worth it. All the hand tools that DeWalt makes are good in my book. Then you have Porter Cable which is a great tool also. Treat your Tools As you would treat yourself. And they will last a long time... Don't lend tools out. they don't come back the way they left..
*Ditto on the Delta, piece of crap. I have ben using a Dewalt 12 inch (DW705) for about 6 years now. Great saw good price. I havent seen the need for a slider yet. I dont know if the price is worth it. But they are high on the testosterone scale.Rick Tuk
*My partner is about to buy the Dewalt, I've got a Hitachi 10", all i can say is I love my saw. I'm sure the Dewalt is nice also. I can't imagine doing a job without it. I don't know if the Dewalt is belt drive, but one thing that is nice about the Hitachi is how smooth it starts up and runs, very little vibration. Although it is purely my opinion, another thing I like about the Hitachi is that its detents for miter cuts don't lock in like some, it makes it very easy to cut just an RCH off-angle.
*Ditto on the Delta, junk right out of the box. I have the Hitachi 8" compound slider, really like it except for when I need the 4x4 capacity. Would have to agree with the above posts on the Dewalt 12"...good price, cuts 4x4, nice saw. Maybe I'll find a used one somewhere. Good luck.
*I've got 2 DeWalts, and they are without any doubt the best compound out there. I've been in woodworking for 30 yrs, and all I see on job sites are DeWalts.John Hebert
*Hey, the Dewalt is definitely a great saw, but lets not forget the Makita 12"compound unit. I went back and forth between the two of them. The Makita was a tad higher in price. I found both units to be very comprable even down to the handle. For comfort the Makita and Dewalt can't be beat. I ended up getting the Makita for the movement of the table for angle setup. I should mention that the Makita was on sale for the same price as the DeWalt. The Makita rotates easily very very smoothly and locks dead solid at critical angles. The DeWalt has a better incrimental gauge on the angle locator which could be handy for fine work. Both units have solid aluminum bases. DeWalt has an edge with contractors because it's in every Lowes, Menards, an Home Depot between here and the Phillipines. And Of course, they also carry all the lovely overpriced accesories for the DeWalt also. Hopefully I gave you a little help. Good Luck, you won't go wrong when you take time to get advice.Dennis Peters
*Think you're all a little too harsh on the DeltaSidekick. Granted, I'm not a carpenter however, my 12" compound Sidekick is great for the averagehomeowner. As for noise, they're all noisy. Asfor the dustbag, show me one that really works. You simply attach a shopvac in lieu of the bag &the dust factor is decreased substantially. AND looking through a plastic blade guard will NEVER give you an accurate placement of the blade on the material you're cutting due to distortion!! DeWalt used to make quality power tools BEFORE they were acquired by Black & Decker. Now they are substandard in quality compared to what theyused to be. I found cost difference (delta vs.dewalt) to be enough so I opted for the Delta. If I were a carpenter (by trade) I think I would opt for the Hitachi 12". It's not cheap however, it will definitely endure daily use and far exceeds both DeWalt & Delta in quality.
*Well, Ed, he wanted feedback, and he's getting it. I'm glad you are happy with your choice, but with regard to your statements, you are all wet about DeWalt, concerning the miter saws. I have an old Delta, have used your saw and the DeWalt extensively, and there is no comparison that would favor the Delta, except saving a few bucks. Your lack of concern about the noise is due to the fact that you probably are hard of hearing from running your saw along with a shop vac. But if we carpenters had to turn on a shop vac every time we made a sawcut, we'd go nuts, let alone the prospect of hauling another large tool around and hooking it up. Forget that. As far as not being able to see the cut through the guard, you better go have a look at the DeWalt. It's the only saw that you CAN see your cut through the guard, and it works perfectly. And the other guys will tell you that the dust bag does work, just gets filled up pretty fast (a good sign that it is working, don't you think?)I think the Makita is a good saw too, just feel the DeWalt is superior, especially with regard to the blade guard, sight thing.MDxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx x
*Hi fellas, I just wanted to add that I've used a Delta frame and trim saw for years and was going to replace it with Delta's 12" CMS. Then I read one of fellow Mad Dogs posts and though not in the market for a SCMS checked out DeWalts 12"CMS after reading about his slider. When I went to Lowes to check out what they had the DeWalt DW705 was on sale for $259.95. Cha Ching !!! I bought it and I think it is the greatest CMS on the market. I soon built a mitre saw stand for it with an adjustable stop, I am thankful for the opinions in Breaktime in helping me to make my choice. Thanks again fellas. Have a great Thanksgiving.
*Hey MDM,Glad something I say helped. I stand behind it. For the record, I have an old Delta that has really served me well, cut massive quantities, not without its quirks, some dangerous, but it has been a good tool. After 12 years, it has been completely stomped into the dust by the newer, better models. This saw stays in the shop. But the DW is the cat's ass, IMOMD
*That's it! I'm callin' K-9 control!
*Oops! Sorry JB, I knew you were out to get me. Maybe all the "issues" on BT are making us more vindictive and paranoid!I'm mainly just laughing at it all
*I've used just about all of them. Bought and wear-out Hitachi 8 1/2 when it first came out, tried Delta and sold it, basic piece of junk. I now own 2 Dewalt compounds and a standard Dewalt mitersaw. My crew loves them. Besides the smooth feel I especially like the trigger/hand grip. Having my hand up instead of sideways just feels better.Bill Swales
*Hey JB, I read that post about K-9 control this morning and couldn't stop laughing about it all day. I guess it would be the most practical thing to do with all those mad dogs howling. MDM.
*I saw it yesterday, 8" makita sliding compound, battery operated. just let me at my checkbook.Rick Tuk
*MDM,Sorry, I think I may have created a bad rep for at least one of us! I heard JB's K9 control truck is headin' fer Texas!xxxx
*MD, if it's heading for Texas I guess I better make sure my wife keeps me on a leash.
*What about a ryobi? I'm looking for a saw with table saw and miter saw features. Please help.
*Tuna, A ryobi with table saw and mitre saw features? I'm confused. Can you explain further?
*I used a bosch 12" for a while trimming houses but the positive stops wore out after a few months being they were plastic. the dewalt 12" is a nice saw, stainles positive stops and is fully adjustable but when cutting large crown moulding on the flat 7 1/4 and larger its no good. so I went to the makita 10" slide it bevels left and right 45 degree's and has a good feel and smooth action and does the job I need it to do and is worth the $549.00
