Same question here w/ sliding saws..
I went to a tool sales company. Sales said go w/ a Makita 10" sliding miter. Bombproof was the term. Looks pretty industrial to me. Lifetime Ownership type of feel looking at it.
Why 10" vs 12" ?
--About 10-15lbs difference I figure between the two sizes
--And some lost capacity ( they don't come right out and say what the saw can cut @ bevel/miter...) 10" Makita capacity was 3 7/8 depth and length is 2x12" at 90* and 2x8 @ 45*L . I've only used Dewalt 12" slider (beast)
I have had very good luck with hitachi! The laser is amazingly accurate and very handy! The 10 inch is a good job sight saw expecially for trim! The new 12 inch is truely a bomb-proof saw but very heavy! I think the thing I like the most about hitachi is its ez adjustablility and it has a slow start on it so it does not jump and make you trigger shy!
I'm going to look around. I'll check the Hitachi out. I like all things Bosch too. However, I just read long term reviews on the Makita and noone seems to hjave anything bad to say. Plus it is $500 new... have yet to work any extras into the deal ; ) and that is half the fun of buying from a true shop.

I'm happy with my Makita 10 inch. Perfect cuts out of the box. I went to calibrate it but my variations in measurement (precision) were much greater than any deviation from nominal (accuracy) exhibited by the saw. I've only had it three or four weeks though so I can't comment on durability other than to echo the sense of its being bombproof. You get slightly more capacity with 12 inch, but IMO you don't gain much or any usable capacity. Specifically, for the cuts I was interested in the extra diameter didn't get me up to the next size of dimensional lumber. That may be true for all cuts.I haven't tried a Bosch slider, but my other Bosch tools seem pretty good.
Just about a month ago we picked up the Bosch 4410L 10" Dual Bevel Sliding Miter (or I should say "I" since it is now the saw I now personally use) and I've been blown away by it. I love it. If I recall correctly I think I paid just around $600 for it too but I will have to look it up to check for sure. For more comments on the saw you can check that old discussion Bosch 4410L 10" Dual Bevel Sliding Miter and I am sure if you use the search function for this forum you find many more good reviews for any size Bosch SCMS.

I'm with Jerrald. I've had the Bosch for a couple of years, and it's fantastic.
Mine was around $540 for the 10".

I've had my Makita 12" for years.
Not a single complaint.

I love my Bosch 10" scm saw. But I'm thinking of getting the Hitachi 8 1/2" for those smaller jobs where I don't feel like getting the Big Bosch out. I'm getting older, ya see....
