I am building a work station in an office with concrete counter tops [ not sitting on base cabnets] . The
U shaped counter will set on angle iron lagged to the wall and posts every 4′ running down the center
of the 27″ wide top . The top will run across the back wall 8′ down a side wall 9′ and 90 out into the
room 5′ . I will build the counter base out of 1 1/8″ plywood to the shape of the counter , it wil set on
the
angle iron lagged to the wall and
set on top of the posts , then a second layer of 3/4″ plywood in the same shape cut in sections , each
section will become the bottom of the form for that section poured. I will pour each piece at home
and strip the sides of the form leaving the bottom 3/4″ plywood attached to the piece on the bottom then
taking the
piece back to the job setting it in place and screw up through the 1 1/8″ into the 3/4″ for a total base
thicknes of 2 7/8″ the concrete will be 2″ thick and the front edge will extend down 2 7/8″ to hide the
two
layers of plywood it sits on . Does this seem sturdy enough I am worried about the 5′ section out in the
room if someone were to sit on it . I will use 3/8″ rebar on a 6″ grid throughout . I thought about running
two pieces of angle iron down the center of the counter welded from post to post on each side of the
post . What psi mix should I use , I would leave the concrete uncolored but I would like to give it an
old weathered look what would I use to do that . More questions later but this is a good starte .
Thanks Randy
