When wiring my new shop a short time ago I ran all the 240v circuits with 4 wires: 10-3 w/ ground. However, all my 240v machines have only 3 wires for the connection, with the neutral wire electrically connected to the body of the machine. So the tools are humming along fine, connected to the 2 hot leads and the neutral, but not to the ground. The supply comes from a subpanel in the shop, so neutral and ground are separate, and are tied together back in the main house panel.
My question: any problems with this? Is there a possibility of creating a dangerous situation here? I am vaguely uncomfortable with this setup but I can’t say why. Any help is appreciated, even if it does contain admonitions about amateurs having just enough knowledge to be dangerous.
