I have a question concerning installing a new dishwasher after removing an old one. I wanted to make some improvements in the new installation.
Can I use a 20 amp single pole switch as a diconnect mounted in the sink base? If I do will I have any motor start up problems? Secondly the tall tub dishwashers seem to have less room under them should I use a piece of flexible conduit (Greenfield) for more protection?

The recipe for linoleum hasn't changed much in nearly 170 years, yet it's still one of the greenest floors money can buy.

Our codes would dictate that the switch be on the wall and be GFI if within 4' of a wet location. I would connect the dishwasher with either 1/4" Flex, like a BX; or 12-2 Romex.
*Ok, that's not a problem I just wondered mainly if I would have any load problems with the switch.
*Can you expand on what the switch is to be used for?
*As a means of disconnect for the dishwasher in the event that the unit would need servicing. I realize that if the unit needs work that it will probably have to be pulled out, but I have always felt that for hardwired appliances, it is safer to provide a disconnect at the unit itself in addition to the breaker. probably 99% of the time the switch will be in the on position. When I replaced my water heater I also wired a 240 volt dbl. pole 30 amp switch ahead of it on the circuit and came out of the junction box with 10-2 w/ground mc cable to the unit (the laundry room was unfinished at the time. this provides me with a secondary disconnect at the unit when I replace elements etc as well as protection for the cable. Similar to the disconnect that should acompany all exterior ac units.
*This is one of those things that are regional. In my area dishwashers and disposals are connected to plugs with outlets under the sink. That outlet/plug is a legal disconnect.
*yeah, I figured I could do that too. I am trying to make improvements as I can. I think the guy who built this house ran out of money and tried to finish it himself. I have found some real half-ass work in it.
