When installing a cooktop in a formica island top? What is the best way to cut out the opening? use a jigsaw or a router and a template. And do the corners have to be rounded.

If the flange on the cooktop covers more than a 1/4" or so a good sharp blade in a jigsaw will work fine. You may get a little minor chipping that can be reduced by laying masking tape on the cut line. If you have acess to a Bosch jigsaw they make a down cut blade [teeth reversed compared to regular blade]that will pretty much eliminate any chipping. Other brands may have them, not sure.
I would definately drill holes in each corner and connect them with straight cuts. A square inside corner in p-lam is very likely to crack. Check the manufacturers literature, there should be a cut out sheet listing dimensions and the recommended radius for the corners.
Good luck, Chuck
*Hey Chuck, Have you ever tried a Bosch blade no. T101-AO? It's used for real fine scroll cuts and also works great on cutting sink and range holes in plam tops. MDM
*Hi Mad Dog, I use a T101? something, not sure of the AO part, T101-B sounds familiar. Man when those things are brand new you can split a fine pencil line with them. I never considered a jigsaw a precision tool until I bought a Bosch several years ago, very nice tool.I checked out your website awhile back, looked really good. I'm a computer idiot [maybe just a regular idiot], how much trouble and time does it take to create and maintain your site? Chuck
