Ryan,
I know that some of the guys that have built stuff with copper treated it just like laminate with contact cement with no problems. As a finisher, I can tell you that the copper itself is still harder than any finish. That said, lacquer sticks fine to copper that is polished bright. Anything solvent based sticks to copper that has been sanded satin. Water based products can tarnish the copper.
Separately, you might ask the client if they’d like to leave it raw and let it develop a patina, it can look very nice if they have some patience.

I've been asked to put a copper top on a table.
It's a small table about 3'x3' and has a bulnose edge all around.
I plan on laying copper sheet over the existing top, mitering and soldering the four corners, and rolling the copper around the bullnose and covering the edge with wood under the table.
She doesn't want a glossy table. I would like to use something heavier than copper flashing just because I don't want the table to make noise as the top flexes. I can get copper in several thicknesses.
I have a few questions,
How can I adhere copper to the table top so that it won't flex as it's used. Will contact cement bond copper?
Copper's pretty soft, how can I protect the surface?

Thanks David,
She wants a patina so I'm gonna try one of those chemicals that is supposed to do the job without needing patience.
