i just made some cove on the table saw. what angles should i cut the back at? i am trying to match some existing cove on a mantle and it looks like it is just 45 degrees.

You're talking about the triangular section that "isn't there" on the back of most cove molding? That's primarily to conserve materials, but also to lighten the pieces, reduce curling/cracking, and avoid problems with slightly-rounded ceiling corners. No special angle, unless you're using angled blocks behind to support the stuff.
Just match what is there. If it is 45 degrees, cut it 45 degrees.
