Covering up melamine end cabinet
Hi folks,
I need to cover up the exposed side of an existing melamine coated particleboard cabinet, end run in our kitchen. I would like to cover with 1/4″ thick, beech veneered MDF paneling (with trim at edges) to match our cabinet doors. Not sure if this will work, but here’s my plan:
- Pre-cut the MDF skins, glue to solid wood edging to make a “cover”;
- Finish the show face of these covers;
- Adheer covers to melamine surfaces using water-based contact cement.
What do you think? I did a test with mdf and melamine scraps, the contact cement seemed to work well enough. I haven’t had good luck with Roo Glue and the other melamine glues.
Do you think I’ll run into trouble with warping of the melamine panels, since there won’t be an air gap between the mdf and melamine? Does this make sense or is there another way you’d recommend? Any comments will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Peter

I would scuff up the melamine before you put on the adhesive.
