I am putting on an addition to my home (750 sq ft) and it has a crawl space. a new furnace for the addition is installed in the crawl space. I am now to the insulation stage and wonder what the pros and cons are of insulating the crawl walls and conditioning the space or insulating between the floor joists and not the walls??
thanks for any input, Steve

Make a tour through past posts and you'll find the reasons why I say; Insulate and make the crawl space part of the house. Do it on the outside of the walls if possible and your local insect population permits. If inside be sure you either cover the insulation with a cementious material or rock. Don't forget the vapor retarder on the dirt floor.
*Check local code first. You might not be allowed to include the crawl space in the envelope -- I know that I can't here in LA.-- J.S.
*No kidding, you have crawl spaces in LA? Thought that was just another name for Sunset Strip.
*crawl space.... full foundation.. same solution... Mike Smith "Foundation insulation" 8/29/01 10:34pm
*John, what's the reasoning behind that? It seems to fly in the face of common sense, particularly if basements are legal. After all, what's a crawlspace but a short basement?Andy
*Andy --I didn't ask for reasoning, there were so many more issues that were really important to me, and this one wasn't. So I just said "OK". The relevant code section says that you have to have at least one square foot of vent opening per 150 square feet of crawl space. That was interpreted to mean that it's gotta be permanently open to the outside.-- J.S.
*How 'bout a short basement with a dirt floor? I've got a walk in crawl space with an insulated ceiling. First summer, when the AC was on (air handler & duct work down there, too) it rained from the ducting. Everything got mouldy. Sealed up the vents and stuck a dehumidifer in there, no problemo. Don't have to dehumidify in the winter either...I don't think I'd insulate the walls of a crawl either inside or out...
