Crawlspace interior piers vs continuous footer

What is the best practice or preferred practice for interior support structures in crawlspace construction? Pads with piers supporting built up beams or a continuous footer supporting a 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 stem wall (correct term??)? Pros ? Cons? Considerations?
Thanks.

I would call this
2 x 4 or 2 x 6 stem wall
a pony wall. A stemwall is concrete.
Interesting question, though. I always pour piers, because (a) concrete is way expensive here, and (b) we often have posts that need a pier of a specified size to bear on.
In a situation where concrete was more affordable, and assuming the site was easy, a strip footing / grade beam with a framed wall on it would eliminate the need for beams or anything bigger than 2x. If there are any point loads, those would need to be taken into account.
One consideration.........
.......would be access in and around the crawl for services etc.
With ductwork
in the crawl, you may have to drop down to get under girders. With a pony wall, all you have to do is clear the 2x plate.
I was thinking my fat ass
well, sort of-not fat by any means, but always a bit wider than the opening.
Barring solid blocking in between, you can run through in the joist spaces-things run under and perpendicular, yes they'd need to drop more.
Access wouldn't be too much of an issue in general w/ the pony wall since it wouldn't have to be sheathed.
bite me
You be the one then to go crawl around.
I'll be the cut man.
I'll
go get coffee. How do you guys take it? Do we need anything from the lumberyard?
I'll be the guy standing around offering "advice".
I've done my fair share of crawling in crawlspaces I can't roll over in 'cause they ain't tall enough for my shoulder widths. What a drag. Also been in some that aren't bad at all! And I'm 6'6". A framed wall ... assuming 24" oc generally wouldn't make things much worse.
And I don't bite ... just make a comment here and there. Don't have to get hostile. I'll even buy you a beer.
clew
Don't misinterpret a good jibe.
Mike Smith coined the infamous quote that was later deemed to be 'too hot' to handle for some of the moderators (customer support) here back b/4 the ever popular changeover. This internet thing is not all it seems in print.
Get yourself over to a fest and you'll see what I mean.
cheers.
don't misinterpret that one either.
I'm working out of town in a basement. Haven't seen much of the light of day since Monday. Getting light challenged.
to top it off, fella called last nite about going to the course for the first round of the year. Dammit-not home and the sticks aren't here. I'm not in a good mood.
