I am installing crown molding in an older house. The walls are brick, and the ceiling is lath and plaster. What is the best method to attach the molding to these surfaces?

Did a similar installation in my house - brick wall, sheetrock ceiling.
Cut triangular wedges from 2 X 4 that would fit behind the crown molding and attached them to the ceiling joists with a pneumatic nailer, then attached the crown to the wedges. Worked quite well.
I thought I was having a Newf moment...
