What's backplaster? Also, not enough information given. Is this interior?, exterior?, how tall? and on and on.

According to the Manufacturer's Installation Instructions, you do _not_ need to prepare clean and untreated masonry. My stucco workers prefer to apply a stucco scratch coat. Different strokes...

No, I would install some expanded lathe, and use some "Type S" mortar and make a scratch coat, at least that is what my manufacturer recommends.
Call the manufacturer, or read the product literature. Most have fairly detailed instructions and the failure them could void any warranty.
