true story but maybe should be in the woodshed tavern under Joke time
Have a customer, rather large woman, we put in a 42 inch shower and went to install the door, both items she supplied, Door was a slider. Explained door was for a 48 inch , no Home depot told her it would fit her shower too, she was not going to take it back, we were told to install it.
We did
well to make a 48 inch door fit a 42 inch hole leaves about 6 inches of overlap in the sliding doors, and making th eopening very small like 17 inches
we toldl her to let it sit for a day to let the caulking cure
she calls a day later, she cant fit through the door. ( I can and I weigh 230)
wants us to take it out , clean it up so she can take it back and get a swinging door
sure lady, at time and materials
what your gonna charge me ????? Sure
but it was our laugh of the day
of course her best fix would be to drop a hundred adn get down to maybe 200 lbs
by the way, should we tell her that her husband and the collage age babysitter fit in just fine

yes
they were trying it out, with their clothes on, at least while we were there
I would be careful... you have installed a shower enclosure with an illegally small door opening. It's either 22" or 24" minimum. In situations like that you should flat-out refuse to do the work.
Illegally?
Are there shower door police?
Is someone actually serving prison time for this?
Maybe code is different somplace
because we did actually call and was told that there was not a minimum
unless I talked to the wrong person
but we will see when it gets inspected next week
but now you got me thinking, and in my code book the only referecne to shower doors says if hinged it must open out
am I looking in the wrong place
Oregon One adn two family dwelling, current addition by the ICC an dthe International Residential Code
however, in my contract , any onwer supplied item we are not responsible for delivery, warranty or code complainace
beside Home Depot sold it, so it has to be right :)
"but now you got me thinking, and in my code book the only referecne to shower doors says if hinged it must open out"I wonder what they would say about a bifold shower door. Those do "swing in".
IRC, 2708.1 "Door shall open outward (min 22"wide)
I wonder if the bifold are not concidered "hinged"?http://www.sterlingplumbing.com/onlinecatalog/detail.jsp?item=3554203&prod_num=3200-30&frm=&module=Shower+Doors
Which year are you looking at? My '03 IRC books says nothing about it, in 2708.1 or in R307. My CodeCheck that references the '00 IRC does cite 2708.1 and UPC 412.6 as the 22" rule. Maybe Isa's off the hook if they're on the '03 code where he is.
I've never actually seen a bifold shower door, and hope I never do, but it would seem that they'd be harder to exit. I think the idea is that you can leap out of the shower if the cold water fails and the hot is scalding you.

I have a bifold and like it, for my application. It is different from the Sterling unit in that it does not have a bottom track or top track. It is cheap plastic and would not be suitable for say a kids bathroom. But I have it on 32" shower for guests and it works nice. You don't have a wide entrance as it has fixed wings on each side so you end up with 16". but it fold in and back so it is only about 9" into the show when open.It uses magnets on the hings and at the outter edge to "lock" it in place and the bottom kicks in to deflect water. It is very cleaver design and functional, but not very rugged.
In situations like that you should flat-out refuse to do the work.
or just flat out flatten her out. No rework that way. Sorry, couldn't resist. <g>
If at first you don't succeed, try using a hammer next time...everything needs some extra persuasion from time to time. -ME
Don't waste your time, trying to get a 42" shower door from any of the Big Boxes! Special order maybe. We do baths on the side & we get 42" doors from the Glass guy all the time. I write them the check for $280. They do everything else, turnkey for under $300 does'nt get much EZer then that!
There is a flooring store here that uses the line in their radio advertisement " would you feel right buying your hardwood from somebody who also works plumbing in aisle nine?
I think your large babe got the flooring guy!
Have a good day
