On a renovation I will need to place a door in a bathroom wall that has wall tile 1/2 way up. Any advice for getting a clean cut thru this surface that will look like original installation?

Rotozip with ceramic bit.
or a circ saw with diamond blade, dust mask, et al.
But I'd be leery of expecting too much. You still have a lot of beating and pounding, prying and nailing before you are finished. To have this cut come out exactly where the edge of neww casing should be is quite a trick. To have all the tile on the wall with no cracked grout lines when you are done is amazing!
Excellence is its own reward!
Also a diamond blade mounted in a 4" angle ginder works. Go slow as makes a lot of noise and mess. Also, it generates a lot of heat, so be wary of this.
I keep hearing/reading about using the rotozip bit for tile.......it only works well in thin tile.....might work fine for this job since it's wall tile....but this reminded me about reading a letter in the mag with a guy saying that's how they cut all their tile....
They must only install wall tile...because the zip bit will burn out in most of the harder floor tiles....and don't even think about touching any stone tiles with it.
And.......cut the row ya want....and plan on running a new top course......doubt very much that a clean enough cut is gonna result.......but stranger things have happened.
Jeff.......Sometimes on the toll road of life.....a handful of change is good.......
Doc, you could avoid cutting the tile if the layout permits you to either backcut the door casing or add to the back of it above the tile line. Demo the tile enough to cut the wall and overlay the casing over the tile beyond the jamb.
