Dallas, TX – Looking for green builder or green building advisor

texone | Posted in General Discussion on January 5, 2021 11:28am

I’m the homeowner planning new construction for a 3000 s/f empty nest home in Dallas (style is Texas Modern). Have developed plans we like with architect and starting to interview builders to get bids, hoping to build summer 2021.
Struggling to find expertise around green building, PGH principles. Finding more focus on code compliance. Looking for either a builder or a third party advisor to help inform choices among insulation, HVAC, solar, etc. to maximize ROI.
Suggestions for Dallas-area builders or third-party advisors I could add to my ‘team’? Thanks.

    Here’s what I would do.
Many moons ago there was a carpenter on this forum. He was from Dallas and over the years we got to know each other......well, as much as can be expected on a forum.

Times go on as did Ed Williams. We’ve lost touch with each other.
But, your question brought Ed back in mind.

He is one good carpenter and if he’s still breathing he might do your job or at least recommend someone who can.

I googled Ed Williams, Dallas and this is what I found:

    Great American Carpentry Co
    THIS IS MY BUSINESS
    (214) 505-0846
    CONTACT US

His name also popped up on the JLC Forum.

This from This Is Carpentry.com. (Gary Katz)

ed-williamsEd Williams has been the owner/operator of The Great American Carpentry Co. Inc. in Dallas, Texas since he founded the business in 1989. Starting professionally in residential carpentry in 1974, Ed had the pleasure of learning the finer points of wood framing, trim carpentry, and cabinet making from old school woodworkers who started learning their trades long before he was born. Today, he and his crews practice those skills in some of the finest homes in Texas. They offer subcontracting services as carpenters and cabinetmakers. With a specialization in remodeling, Ed also serves as a general contractor for select Dallas clients. There isn’t much they can’t do with a full-service 7,000-sq. ft. woodshop!

Please, if you do make contact, let him know Calvin says hey!

    Thanks and good luck!

      Well, Hey Calvin!

I am still alive and kicking and still covered in sawdust. Yessir, it's been many moons and I can't believe you remembered me. I'm doing well and hope you are too.

My sister-in-law found this post when she googled my cell number yesterday. Strange how things happen. No, I never heard from anybody about green building - that I can remember, but if I did, I had to tell them I'm not "Green Certified" anyway. I'm too old and too close to hanging up the hammer to be messing with that stuff. After doing this for 47 years 40 hours a week, it's a bit late in my career to be starting a new phase. I'll just keep going old school until I can't any more. But thank you so much for recommending me - I really appreciate it.

      Your Friend,

      Ed.

Had to re-post to get notifications. Had to start over as a new member with my new email address or I wouldn't receive notifications. My old email address went belly-up. AT&T in their infinite wisdom canceled the old "swbell.net" domain and I lost that account overnight about two years ago along with everything that goes with that. Really sucked.

    Thanks again,

    Ed.

Ok - had to post AGAIN this time with my new account name and email.

        Well, don’t that beat all!
Very good to hear from you! Took a chance and despite the aging brain and body……this here world really isn’t that big.

One of these days (and I may have threatened this before) We’ll be passing one side or the other of Dallas and I’ll try notifying you through here. I waved this spring!

        Ha!

        1. GACCDallas | Jul 14, 2021 12:02am | #7

I may beat you to it - who knows, I've never been to Ohio, but one day who knows. I'll be waving back at you.

I see that the Tavern is closed down. That was a wild place. But I guess it was inevitable. I remember getting a little redneck with someone over there for a while. Can't think of the guys name, but he was pretty offensive and I don't put up with that. Yessir, it's been a long time. Any of the old regulars still around?

          Ed.

Well Ed, the story here is a strange one. FHB went through quite a few changes over the years. This forum moved along, or rather got dragged along with it. Server changes brought confusion and moderation in the tavern alienated some folks to the point that some broke off and a few other forums were started. Imagine getting thrown out of a bar a few times. Doesn’t take long to find another stool to sit on.

The latest iteration is called Breaktime3 and can be found at
            http://forums.delphiforums.com/breaktime_3/start.

Some names you’ll remember there, some aliases maybe not.
Just had dinner with Rich Beckman and his wife. The “rooftop bordello guy”. Going to hit the camping trail and meet up with Mike Smith and Helen. We get together with the Crazy Legs Blodgett’s when we can…….Jim still pops up over there. Mike and Rich, not so much.

I stick around here for just this purpose, in case someone drops by. Met some good folks, learned some things, and why not.

            Stay in touch.

  4. GACCDallas | Jul 14, 2021 03:45pm | #9

Yessir, everything changes. I might go lurking around there just to see what's going on. I remember Jim Blodgett's name! It's a miracle that I can remember anything at my age.

    Take care,

    Ed.

    1. calvin | Jul 14, 2021 06:30pm | #10

Do that, hope you run into some familiar names. Try the screen name you used here, only the burnouts could forget it.

And remember, plumbing has no business in an attic!
Wished I’d have taken a few rolls of pex with us this March when we passed through…..would’a paid for the fuel there and back.
