SOUTH DAYTONA — If it looks kitschy it will not be permitted in the city, if an ordinance addressing accessory structures is passed.
City Council members voted unanimously at their last meeting to prohibit structures that resemble pet and farm animals, giant oranges, dinosaurs and the like.
According to Community Development Director John Dillard, there is one such type of structure — a Quonset hut-style structure — in the city. A Quonset hut is a lightweight prefabricated structure made of corrugated galvanized iron and having a semicircular cross section.
Other examples of structures that would no longer be permitted if the ordinance is passed include, but are not limited to, igloos, domes or geodesic domes, teepees, log cabins, western false fronts, medieval castles, caves and any other structure of architectural oddity.
Before this ordinance, the city’s Land Development Code did not address accessory structures that were inconsistent with the surrounding area. Although it is possible for most accessory structures to blend into the surrounding area, there are some types of structures that do not, and therefore accessory structures should not be permitted, staff has determined.

Why is that a "Darwin award"?
Why is that a "Darwin award"?
Or in the "Green Building" folder for that matter. Unless of course, if buildings that are actually the color of green are no longer permitted in South Daytona.

True.

Because it would preclude most "alternative" building types. Or is that not obvious enough?
Nope, not obvious enough. Unless you've got in mind some secret energy-saving scheme involving western false fronts.Otherwise it's just a community restricting building styles to maintain their "character", something that I find mildly offensive but that is done all the time.

In Las Vegas they went out of their way to ban banked earth and subterranean structures. Which are two the structure types with the most potential to be comfortable there without a lot of energy input. The soil temperature at a depth of five feet, is very close to the five year mean temperature. Which in Vegas is about 68-degrees. But since the ordinance only covers accessory structures, you still might be able to build some thing interesting, and then get the rest of the structures approved because the match the main structure.

Yeah, as I indicated, I don't care for the practice, but it's sort of a "local option" thing -- I figure let them do what they want so long as it's not causing too much trouble for other people.(Of course, in Vegas they'd appear to hardly have a leg to stand on, banning earth-sheltered construction but allowing pyramids and the like.)

Maybe they are trying to get a handle on the underground economy.
