I’m sure this has been asked before but a search didn’t reveal an answer.
The deck is 300 sq feet over a kitchen. The deck floor structure is TJI 11 7/8 schedule 550 on 12 with a span of 19 feet. Should hold a load. The available pitch from second floor structure to the edge of the deck is 4 inches over 15 feet. There is no roof over the deck. Climate is Denver – snow and rain.
The question is – should I use lightweight concrete as the deck surface or sleepers/decking over membrane/subfloor? If concrete, it’d be over 3/4 inch corrugated steel with ice/water shield at the perimeter. Of course water infiltration is the issue but also durability.
Thanks!
Peter

Duradek is what I use. Check their web site http://www.duradek.com to find a dealer in your area.
*Dear Peter,I posted a message a couple down from yours regarding the same thing in Bailey (near Denver). I'm thinking of using flagstone or tile as the flooring rather than wood and I'll be putting a roof over the section of decks with living space under them. One of the guys suggested using pedestals so maintenance of the membrance isn't so hard. That was one of my concerns since I don't believe that anything is COMPLETELY impermeable and want easy access to check on the membrane's condition. If you are set on no roofs over your deck, then check out one of the recent FineHomebuilding issues....they had an article on decks over living space from a house out east. (not the same environment but probably the same construction techniques). Let me know how it goes.
*> Should hold a load. Maybe - Maybe not. Anything thats 19' long and 12" deep is pretty well maxed out. Also - Keep in mind that something has to hold up those I-joists.
*- Keep in mind that something has to hold up those I-joiststrue.I have W10 x 39 I beams on each end of an 18 foot span held up by 4" schedule 40 posts that carry through to ground on 48 x 48 x 16 isolation padsThe 11 7/8 Schedule 550 joists have a max span rating of 28 feet and as mentioned I'm at 18 between the beams.Peter
*11 7/8 joists spanning 28' ??? I don't think so. You'd better check your span charts again.
*I direct you to the following link - TJI's residential floor span charthttp://www.trusjoist.com/datachunks/RUsaFlTjiSpn/dcindex.cfmPlease look at the 11 7/8 schedule 550 joist rating - 12" spacingBear in mind that my span is 18 feetPeter
