I am building a 1200 sq foot deck and I would like some advice about building some planters, deck seating, and a bbq island. The specific question is if these structures can be built by attaching plywood to the deck joists and then building up from there.
The deck has 2×8 pt joists and 4/8 pt girders. There is a concrete stem wall around the perimeter of the deck.
To build the deck structures the plan is to use 3/4 pt plywood, seal it with spar varnish, then attach that to the joists. 2×4 material will be the frame of the structures, then they will be sheathed and then covered with the deck wood (purple heart and ipe.
Is this the right way to build these structures or should the 2×4 material be anchored directly into the joists?
Thanks
