Decks: Screws vs. Ring Shank Gun Nails
I’m building a 16 X 26″ deck out of pressure treated lumber and trying to decide whether to use screws or ring-shank gun nails for the decking itself. Local building codes in my area are weak. Any advice would be helpful? Thanks.

Deck screws will perform long-term better than RS nails....provided you're using bonafide deck screws. Just be certain to use screws (or RS nails) that will resist the corrosive properties of PT lumber.
I prefer screws for decking. This allows you to replace a board easier (if the screws are not rusted). Stainless steel screws are best. The screws designed for composite decking also work great. They start with a fine thread at the point and switch to a coarser thread near the head. This rethreads the deck material allowing you to draw it tightly to the joists.

I guess I should have added the following: I won't own the house for more than five years and the cost and time required for building are important factors in my decision. While it is against my ethic to building anything substandard, I'm interested to know if RS gun nails are adequate. Thank you for your replies.
Ring shanks are superior to smooth nails, so if your're going to nail it, use the rings. You might check the Maze Nail site to see if they have what you need.
Contrary to the previos poster (Adam?) you don't want the deck boards to have threads engaged. The threaded portion oif the screw should be in the joist, and the smooth shank should be in the deck board. The 3 and 3-1/2" deck screws are not threaded full-length for that reason.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
I always believed that as well Ed until I tried the screws designed for composite decking. They work great. Give it a try.
