I’m in the process of building an inexpensive computer desk. It’s made out of birch ply w/maple fronts. The guy wants it stained rich and dark. I built the thing, but now comes the finishing part. I was wondering if anyone has a really good way of doing it to get the wood dark enough and keep the blotch to a minimum.
I know oil stain makes a mess, gell makes half a mess.Thought of using the dyes, anyone tried them with maple?

The maple won't be a problem. It's hard enough that the stain won't blotch much as long as you'be got it sanded real smooth.
The birch faced ply will blotch. First, wipe on a sanding sealer and stain over that.
Make up half a dozen samples from the scrap ply for your customer to look at first. The worst thing that can happen is you deliver the desk and he says: "That's not the color I wanted." Been there before.
