dewalt advertising gotta go

hvtrimguy | Posted in General Discussion on September 2, 2008 07:05am

I come to breaktime to relax and socialize and ask for advice/offer advice. not to see big banners with dewalt logos on them. what is the deal?

LOL, That banner has been promoting Fine Homebuilding online subscriptions for the past 6 months, or more.

Guess they finally got a sponsor.

Give it time, you won't see after awhile, and it is only below the first post of the next block of 20.

They are advertising for a trim guy contest.

Besides, oh dang! I forgot my drills, and circular saw....what's wrong with DeWalt?

Better DeWalt than having some crappy Bosch or HD logo. =~)

High winds, gale force, blew away the sawdust. Scrap is in the bucket, can't believe it didn't blow away too.

Actually, the reason I took the pic (1.3 megpixel, low resolution hides the scratches) was to show the incredible aerodynamics of the DeWalt gear.

DeWalt. Extreme gear for extreme conditions.

Well I do not have a photo to show since my tools are not setup all in the same place right now.
But I do use my DeWalt tools every day and my chop saw has 3 years of use and only replaced the brushes and it is still a great saw. (many hours of use)
And I also bought the a small portable dewalt table saw for those short term setups. I still set up a cast iron top contractor's saw on long term jobs. So I like DeWalt tools But regardless although this is a public forum it is still finehomebuilding and they need ad revenue to keep this site up. That Ad is how they make money. So unless you work for free I would expect that you can understand that those that host this site do not work for free ether.Oh and also hvtrimguy you have a link to your site on your posts that is not exactly the same as the ad banner but it does promote your work and you can post here with out that liink. So don't you think it is a little hypocritical to complain about a ad banner and put your own advertising in your post?Edited 9/2/2008 9:02 am ET by MFournier

Well, it's not hard to get rid of.

    Just use Firefox http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox

    and the Ad Blocker plugin.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

Follow the directions on how to turn the individual ads off, and you are good to go.

Next it will be a scrolling banner with cartoon characters waving at us.  Then the ads will begin appearing more frequently and eventually between each post.

What I'd like Dewalt and Taunton to know is that this kind of advertising gets a mildly negative reaction from me.  If your tools are better than others and the price is fair, you'll my business.  Otherwise, it's no sale.

And IMO Taunton should look at this board as a valuable circulation asset, not as an opportunity to further capitalize on the free expert advice some of us provide to their readers.

BTW, since the thread on BT's language taboos disappeared the other day, I'd be willing to bet that this one will be gone before lunch too.

Edit:  It's one thing to monitor a message board, it's another to censor conversations which may not be favorable to you.

    Advertising pays the bills.

You're supposed to pretend to notice it, that way they keep paying for the site.  Like on tv, you're supposed to pretend you see the ads, otherwise it'll be all pay tv.

    1. MSA1 | Sep 04, 2008 02:12am | #46

Uh, for probably 80% of the people, it is pay TV. I have basic cable and it runs $60/ month.

I remember when cable first came to my neighborhood in 1979. It cost $9.99 / month and you paid for it cause "there's no commercials".

      That lasted a long time.

Family.....They're always there when they need you.

Do you really think T. Press provides this forum just to be nice?  They have a business to run just like the rest of (most) of us.

I think they provide this forum for "exposure".  That is, the more exposure they get, the more subscribers (to the magazine) they'll get.  But like most advertising, I'm sure it's very hard to find a direct correlation between money spent here and money received in subscriptions (and books, CD's, etc.).

One day, some newly appointed executive-in-charge-of-revenue will ask the folks sponsoring this website to justify their budget and prove that it results in sufficient increased sales.  That will probably be a very hard justification and may result in the demise of this site.  If that day ever comes, I hope they give us some advanced warning so we can all agree on a new hang-out.

One day, some newly appointed executive-in-charge-of-revenue will ask the folks sponsoring this website to justify their budget

You say that like you think it hasn't already happened. What makes you think that...?

Actually, it would be extremely surprising if Taunton corporate did not regularly require their various divisions to justify their budgets. That is standard corporate practise. Obviously, the web-forum group has done their justifying successfully so far or we wouldn't be here discussing anything.

But you know what? It wouldn't be a Bad Thing if those of us along for this 'free ride' clicked on those ads once in a while. Even if you don't wanna buy whatever is being advertised; even if you think yellow tools are the devil's spawn; even if....

Just click on it. Yeah, I don't like ads either, but I would like having to pay a subscription to use this forum even less. (And I would like having it disappear least of all.)

Click the ad, then ignore it afterwards. Costs you nothing, but it pays 'per click' to Uncle Taunton.

Think about it this way: those ads could be a lot worse. They could blink, flash, jump around the screen, or play midi-music or stupid sound effects on mouse-over. They also have a far lower piss-off factor than the ones embedded at the beginning of some of the newer DVD movies. You know, DVD's you actually pay money to own or rent? With embedded advertising?? Which immoral marketing whöre thought up that one...?

You find me an image that better expresses the entrenched, unquenchable, and necessary anger consequent to the proverb above it, and I'll use it.

So far, I haven't found one.

            Ooops.

I saw the :) in your post, but I got so wrapped up in searching my immense and vast vocabulary for $25 words with which to impress you into submission...that I forgot to put a <;~)> in my answer.

I don't mind the little advertising...at least it is advertising for an actual chance to win something. Most of all I appreciate this site and the fact that it's FREE and has few RULES. I also frequent the forum over at OWWM.org and often get fed up with the administration there; there are too many rules and it's run with a "don't like it, then go start your own forum" attitude (that was actually what I was told there when I tried to suggest that air compressors were valuable enough machines to the woodworking environment to warrant their own index). Any gripe there is immediatly tossed out and discussion off machine context is nearly prohibited. While here, I only get a little peeved at the DIY crowd that likes to throw thier 2 cents into areas they don't have the real knowledge of or come to ask questions like "how much to remodel a bathroom" or "how to build my house"...questions that usually make me have to hold myself back from telling them to just hire a real carpenter.I am also glad that the Tavern is gone...only went there a couple of times to find that it was just a politics and religion rant area.Overall, Taunton has the best forum I have been to yet.gk

Is that true? the Tavern gone. I had myself removed durring the last election and damn happy because of it.  I dont miss any part of it.

OH, I thought I read something about it being slashed from the BT site so thought maybe they'd given it the ax.

Don't want to see it axed cause then all that BS would spew out here into the other threads and who the hell wants that!

so printing segments of the breaktime forum in the magazine provides no benefit to taunton at all? I'm thinking they make a nice profit on the mag and all of teir publications which I have purchased and enjoyed reading many of."it aint the work I mind,
It's the feeling of falling further behind."Bozini Latinihttp://www.ingrainedwoodworking.com

So what's the big deal about a small ad that's attached to the first of 20 posts? It's Tauntons site, they can do what they want with it, just like your eyes are yours, and you can look away from the ad if you so choose.

If you want a hang out that's not controlled by some corporation, go to Quittintime. With no disrespect intended towards Quittintime (or those who have invested time/money in it), there are some huge differences. Taunton brings a lot of traffic to Breaktime which is why it is so popular. Quittintime has much less activity.
