nash, I'm almost real (?) sure that Mike Guertin did an article a while back in EITHER FHB or JLC. I'm thinking it was FHB. Maybe in the last 2 years. Try searching on the site.
As with any design in shingle, planning ahead is very important to maintain the coverage of preceeding courses.
I can tell you this, graph it out on paper using the 5'' exposure and finished size. This might help you look ahead to see how you're going to cut out the pattern and plan your undercoursing.
Best of luck.

Here's a couple pictures that I found in an old FHB (#27) a couple days ago. I don't know why you don't see patterns like this more often.

thanks for the suggestions so far.
those pics are along the lines of what i want to do.
I know i've seen the diamaond I want to do somewhere, I just have not been able to find it yet.
any other tips ?
I think i know what u want. Start the pattern over a wide shingle , 8" - 10" . If your expsoure is 5" rip the pattern shingles at 5" then measure in 2 1/2" to center of the butt and up 2 1/8 on side and square a line. Connect the dots frm butt to 2 1/8 mark and cut into 2 sided diamond. Stack the pattern and nail high. As the pattern changes u will have to cut one side of couse shingle into pattern. Remember to watch your stagger and nailing, tricky at first but really simple. I use it as my trademark on siding and red cedar roofing jobs
that sounds aloug the lines of what I want to do. I guess I should lay it out on the ground first full scale.
do you have any pictures ?
thanks
