They're there so you learn how to use the search button up above. There's a bunch of archived stuff about this.

I'll give you a hint - think like a framer not a cabinetmaker. It's used for laying out engineered joists and trusses as an alternative to 16" or 24" spacing.

*if you divide an 8 ft. sheet into 4 spans (5 joists), you get 24 inch..6 spans... 16 inch5 spans.... 19.2 inch (looks like 3/16.. but it's actually 2/10ths)..just like mr. pita says....

*My Dad is a cabinet maker also...I hate it when he helps my crew frame because he says things like " cut that sheet to 84 and 9/32nds" at which point I scream "go sit in the truck for awhile, you need a time out" Keith C.

*Keith, Keith your dad only frames to 32nd tolerances?! Looks pretty sloppy to me:):)Isn't it amazing how the same questions keep coming up over and over? Andy where is that big, bold blurb on how to use the Archives we discussed some months ago?

          3. Guest_ | Oct 05, 2000 07:30pm | #7

*fredb... everytime i advise someone to check the archives.. i try it myself.. and it's a bear..three hits before i got the right combination...((tape measure diamonds))) so part of the problem is knowing how to phrase the question....

*Lionel, women drive me crazy, the diamonds don't do a thing.By the way, does anyone remember the markings on the back of the old Stanley tapes? Had all sorts of good stuff. All I can remember is a table for nail lengths...

          5. Guest_ | Oct 05, 2000 09:30pm | #9

*also had a short metric scale.. wish they would bring it back...

          6. Guest_ | Oct 05, 2000 09:36pm | #10

*Common dimensional vs. real lumber sizes, also. I only ever saw this on the 16 footers, did the 25 footers have it too?

          7. Guest_ | Oct 06, 2000 01:18am | #11

*25 ft tapes Pita? Those didn't happen 'til they made them 1" wide, and I think we lost the back writing about the same time, if not before.Ya Mike, would it be too tough for them to do an engineering and metric scale on the back of the blade? Man, they would sell like hotcakes, and cost like what, 2 cents more per unit to make? Not like they don't almost give them away as it is.

          8. Guest_ | Oct 06, 2000 05:00pm | #12

*No the writing was still there. I bought my first 16 ft about 10-12 yrs. ago (yes, I am relatively new at this :)) and it had the writing. I know the 25 ft. tapes have been around longer than that...

            *I'm a cabinet maker! Only 32nds? 128ths is better! Trouble is I can't see 128th any more...........
