There has been a lot of discussion around our shop latley about the diamonds on tape measures. The two uses I have found so far are to put 5 studs in an 8 ft. wall, or to put 5 trusses in the same space. I have never encountered a need for either of these applications in some 25 years of building.I would like to know of anyone who actually has a useful purpose for these marks.

William,
That is exactly what they are for. If 24" o.c. is too weak for a span, 19.2" may work without going to 16" o.c.
I have seen it used for trusses, rafters or floor joists but have never seen it for wall studs. I have used 19.2" a time or two with TJI's in floors myself.

*It's an alternate spacing on a 4x8 instead of 24 or 16"

It or they are primarily intended for ..... the suspense and the correct answer would be for iron workers! Beams and girders, challenges?

I want you all to notice that I have carefully avoided degenerating this post - and, boy, was it tempting! ; )

diamonds on tape, designed for tji framing quite
often specd for 19.2
*
did'nt the diamonds come before tji.
*not challenging but I am curious - give it up!
*TJI is older than you might think but the answer is yes. 19.2" was used sometimes in commercial construction before TJI's
