Will soon be replacing a dip tube in a shortie electric HWT. Lucky for me, the supply pipe has a union – so thank you to whoever did the initial install.
The local supplier only carries long ones. How critical is length to safe and efficient operation? Do I simply cut the dip tube to length with a pvc pipe cutter? Does it matter if the tube runs near the elements?

No problem, remove the old one, insert a stiff wire or tape into it as far as it will go . Cut the new tube approx 1" shorter than the measurement. Use teflon and re-tighten securely.
Thanks a lot Hube.
Got her done today. Had to remove the tank's nipple with an internal pipe wrench to get at the old dip tube (all but 2" of it were 'gone', lost somewhere in the tank). New nipple, new tube, teflon and pipe dope. All is well. Thanks again.
