I tried reading the other links on roof venting questions, and my head was spinning with all the different situations and tangent questions, so let me try a new question. I have a kitchen area build off the house, roof rafters 2×10 16oc 3/12 pitch that terminate against a ledger about 2/3 the way up the house, no collar ties. So basically an open angled ceiling, 8′ at the low end and maybe 11′ at the peak. No ridge, the asphalt shingles terminate against the side of the house. I installed a vented soffit, and need to put R30 bats between the rafters. Because there is no “ridge vent” at the top of the rafters, is it a good idea to install foam spacers to try and space the R30 bats off of the plywood roof sheathing, or just put in the bats against the sheathing? Im confused from what I had previously read. Is the air space to keep the shingles cool, or to keep condensation off the bats? Without a ridge vent I dont think I will get a lot of air movement above the bats, but I would think some if I install the foam spacers. I am in NY, where the outside temp goes from -10 to 90 depending on the season. Does anyone have any input? thanks, this site has been a great help to a newbie.
